Built By Nature – Strengthened by Design

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing renewable construction materials on Earth.

Its use in structural applications is expanding rapidly but due to its organic nature the ability to join / connect it together in a consistent, quantifiable way has been limited.

Node Company is redefining how the world builds with bamboo and it has developed a suite of connectors which will transform the potential of bamboo in both structural and non-structural applications. They marry the variability of working with nature and modern manufacturing methods to enable dimensional consistency, structural security and ease of use.

The flexibility of the connectors allows bamboo to be constructed in geometrically consistent modular form with almost infinite variability making the combination unique in their potential for construction systems.

Connector Nodes

A versatile system of precision-engineered connector nodes designed to support a wide range of structural applications.

Structure

The connectors have been designed for the most extreme loading on the planet, including for earthquakes and hurricanes, Combined with other unique structural strategies, the connectors have been designed with a deep understanding of the anisotropic properties of the bamboo culm, ensuring structural integrity & long-term performance to deliver predictable, repeatable use in real world conditions.

Durability

The connectors are constructed from materials which are aligned with 21st Century building design life for properties including infestation, sun and water degradation.

Quality Control / Guarantee

Our products have been manufactured and thoroughly tested to ensure consistency of both dimensions, material and design use, and in all climates.

Sustainability

The combination of bamboo, a reproductive grass and bio-based connectors produces the most sustainable modular construction system currently on the planet.

Reusability

With a fully modular dry mechanical installation system, after use the connectors can easily be reused supporting circular construction and reducing material waste.

Node Company

About us

Node Company is formed of a series of specialised and complimentary individuals, each experts in their own field, coming together to create a world first company covering all aspects of bamboo technology, design and engineering.

Mission

Our mission is to revolutionise sustainable construction by providing a patented bamboo connector node system that unlocks the full potential of bamboo as a global building material. The importance of our work is already evident and live with the construction of 10 prototype houses in Nicaragua..

Vision

A world where bamboo construction is standardised, accessible, and regenerative.

In my lifetime, bamboo will become part of the accepted palette of materials in the Western industrial construction industry, and will be key in helping solve the global housing crisis, particularly in the global south where bamboo is indigenous

The Problem

Historically, Bamboo has been used in the tropics but joined for traditional homes, and more recently in exotic beach resorts, using bespoke methods which are time consuming, inconsistent in performance and non-transferable. It is restricted in its use by limited means of connection.

The traditional methods have in recent years been expanded by using metal fixings and improved through use of the addition of cement grouting to reinforce the bamboo at the connection. This is both time consuming and difficult to control quality and measurable

Bamboo offers many advantages as a construction material. It is incredibly strong and has the same tensile strength often described as vegetable steel! It is more akin to vegetable carbon fibre with directional strength properties. It can be used to build houses, bridges, bicycles, and a wide range of other structures. It is inexpensive, grows quickly, and has remarkable mechanical properties.

However, the connections between bamboo elements are often the most challenging part of bamboo construction. There are several reasons for this. Bamboo naturally has a somewhat irregular, pseudo circular profile. Designing joints that fit these varying curved shapes—especially around the nodes—results in complex geometric challenges.

The material properties are extremely non uniform due to its method of growth, with the structural fibres running longitudinally only.
